Bukhansan National Park

Since I live in Yeonsinnae and like hiking and mountain side, this post will be about Bukhansan hiking trails and about my hike. I like going to Bukhansan which is very near to my place and we went there last Monday again.
May is a good time for hiking it is not very hot and windy.  It was really fun and Bukhansan is always a good mountain to visit. This time we did not choose the main top, which is the most attractive hiking course, because it was a national holiday so we guessed that everybody will go there.

Bukhansan is a great National Park in Seoul. There are many courses and many peaks in the park.
The Jokduribong course is about 5 hours and almost 10 kilometers. The course is very steep in sections but it's very interesting and beautiful course.

We reached the peak where there were a lot of people and we took photos. Everyone brought some food for lunch and a snack, especially kimbab, because we stopped by a kimbab chonguk place on the way to the Bukhansan.

Here we are:

It was a very international hiking group. Sebastian from Germany and Paolo from Italy, Ezat from Malaysia, Abhi from India, DJ and his wife from Korea. we had a family from USA and me, from Hungary^^

We spent a good time there, on the way down we stoped by a buddhist temple. It was one day before Buddha's birthday, so there were some celebration preparing already.

And now let me recommaned you hiking trails:

National parks are very rarely within a city, and yet Bukhansan Mountain was designated as a the 15th national park of Korea in 1983. With an area of 79.9㎢, it stretches over Seoul and Gyeonggi-do.

We did the Jokduribong hiking trail, and here I show you others:

1. Starting from Bukhansanseong (Fortress) ticket office, Baegundae (Peak) trail is not too rough and includes the widest valley in Bukhansan.

2. Hyeongjebong trail is popular with families and will interest naturalists and historians alike. Hike through the gorges with their clear streams, and enjoy spotting native flowers and wild animals along the way.

3. Bibong trail is narrow with a tiny stream on either side and is ideal for those hiking alone. On the way to Bibong (Peak), you will come across King Jinheung’s Monument commemorating the Silla’s territorial expansion erected by King Jinheung (540-576), 24th monarch of the Silla Kingdom.

Uiryeong (Ridge) Eco Path is an unpaved 7 km hiking trail through areas of outstanding natural beauty which remained untouched for 41 years during security closures. Walking barefoot is popular with many hikers on this trail.

OK POP CLUB

Let me introduce the first k pop club in Hongdae!

Due to the Hallyu (Korean wave) getting more people get to know about Korean culture thru the dramas and pop music. A lot of tourists come to Seoul to discover the city and to know more about Korean culture. Many of them try to know more about Korean music and wish to see the famous idols so they visit their concerts and enjoying the music.

There is another way to enjoy k pop! So far we could not find any club where we can dance and listen to Korean pop music. But.. The first one is here. OK POP CLUB. It is located in the most popular party area, Hongik Univesity (a.k.a. Hongdae). All tourists must visit there to feel the really Korean youngsters' life.

It is a perfect place to enjoy the night with Korean music.  I recommand for everybody to go to OK POP Club parties.( especially on Friday and Saturday there are crazy parties =))

Even if you are alone, go by, you will not regret and not feel bored. Talking with the staffs and owners are really fun, they are friendly, going to you and take photos with you, making friendship with all the guests and  help you to get more info about Korean culture and music.
I really enjoyed meeting people from other countries and was interesting to talk to them about why they come to Korean and about our common interests.

Soo.... This place is in Hongdae are which is a very famous party place for young people.  You must visit place!!!

See, how the club looks like:

If you are a traveler in Korean you should definitely visit it so that you can know more about Korean night life and pop music at the same time. This is something special.

This ok pop club is not just a simple club, it operates during the day as a coffee shop. Daytime you can visit there with your friends and chatting with a cup of coffee ( or even they have brunch menus too). It was so delicious and glad to eat something not spicy^^

I recommend you to go there during the day because it is a better time to take photos and it is not that crowd you can request your favorite songs and enjoy the quiet place.   Of course you can enjoy the totally different mood, if you go both daytime night time. same place but very different environment.

What makes this small place so special?

Seoul Lantern Festival

This festival is held in Cheonggyecheon Stream.

I am always excited about the lantern festival.
About twice a year we can walk along the stream with lanterns it is really nice for taking pictures and feel the korean buddhist culture.

The Lotus Lantern Festival, held annually in honor of Buddha’s birthday, which falls on May 6 this year, will be held from April 25 to May 11, 2014.

According to Buddhist beliefs, lanterns symbolize wisdom in that they bring light to the world. “Yeondeung,” which means lantern lighting, is an important ritual in Buddhism that pays respect to Buddha. The lantern lighting began in Korea during the Goryeo (918-1392) and Joseon (1392-1910) Dynasties and has been preserved through rituals such as the lotus lantern service and the lotus lantern parade.

The modern day Lotus Lantern Festival is designed to bring local and international visitors together through an array of festive programs. This year’s event offers visitors the chance to make their own lantern, taste Buddhist temple dishes, produce rubbings of various Buddhist designs, and much more.

The festival’s start is announced with a lighting ceremony (Jeomdeungsik) where a large sized lantern is lit in Gwanghwamun Square on April 16. The festival will kick off on April 25, with a traditional lantern exhibition at
Cheonggyecheon Stream, Jogyesa Temple and Bongeunsa Temple.

On April 26, a spectacular lantern parade will take place, featuring more than 100,000 massive, illuminated lanterns in the shape of lotus flowers, stupas, elephants, dragons, and more. The spectacle created by these lights bobbing and swaying down the entire length of Jongno Street is not to be missed!

Where to go in March?

Best travel tips out of Seoul, enjoy the early spring^^

Gwangyang Maehwa Village

Head out to Gwangyang, the eastern edge of Jeollanam-do bordering the South Sea where the annual maehwa (apricot flower) festival will take place March 23–31. In springtime, Maehwa Village, the festival site, becomes a most splendid landscape as the apricot flowers burst into bloom. Picture-taking is by far the most popular thing to do, as families and friends preserve their memories of a beautiful spring day.
A maehwa blossom photo contest, opportunities to learn traditional Korean drawing, and a variety of other craft-filled opportunities will also go on at the event. This festival truly shows the splendors of Korea’s countryside and even an occasional glimpse into the past.

what to eat?
Hungry festival goers can indulge in the smorgasbord of local specialties as well as food and drink made with maesil (apricot fruit and flowers). Judging from the many bulgogi restaurants in Seoul that flash “Gwangyang” in their signage, Gwangyang is in a sense regarded as a mecca of this dish.

what else to see there?
Close to Gwangyang is Suncheon, which is known for its ecological park and many species of birds.
Yeosu, the site of the flamboyant world expo last year, sits just around the corner in the region.

Gurye Sansuyu Festival

The small town of Gurye in southwest Korea is best known as a gateway to Jirisan National Park.
In March, though, it becomes a destination worth visiting in its own right when the area around Sandong Township hosts Gurye Sansuyu Festival (Mar 22–30), dedicated to the yellow blossoms of the sansuyu (cornel tree). Sandong is home to the country’s largest colony of sansuyu trees.
The flowers are made into tea, alcohol, and food, all of which can be sampled at this festival.
The festival wouldn’t be complete without a hike on Mt. Jirisan to appreciate the yellow splendor blanketing the mountain.

Dosanseowon Confucian Academy

Let's go to Andong.

I will show you a place you must visit in Andong.

Sacred place of Korean Spiritual Culture

Dosanseowon, located in Togye-ri, Dosan-myeon, Andong-si, Gyoungbuk, was built to admire and memory the scholarship and virtue of Toegye Leehwang (Seonjo 7). Its buildings are decorated neatly and simply, which properly reflects his attitude and personality as a scholar.
In the structural viewpoint, Dosanseowon divided into Dosanseodang and Dosanseowon. Dosanseodang is the place he, by himself, taught his followers, whereas Dosanseodang was built after his death.

Dosan Confucian Academy was established in 1574 (7th year under the reign of King Seonjo), by the disciples and others who cherished their memories of the premier Lee Hwang.

Dosan Lecture Hall was an academy where Toegye Lee Hwang taught his students and concentrated on his academic studies. In 1574 (the 7th year under the reign of King Seonjo (1567~1608)) of the Joseon Dynasty (1392~1910), Confucian scholars established a shrine called Sangdeoksa. In 1969, it was designated as a National Treasure No. 170. After placing the mortuary and performing the sacrificial rites, they finished the Lecture Hall by building Jeongyodang (National Treasure No.210) and the West and East Wings (where scholars could study). When the Lecture Hall was finished King Seonjo bestowed the sign.

When you enter the main entrance there is Dosan Lecture Hall on the right. The structure of the building is simple with the square pillars and simple structures of the girders inserted in the crosspieces. If you go up behind the Lecture Hall and pass the Jindo Gate, there is Gwangmyeongsil where books are stored. You can also find the main building, Jeongyodang and the West and East Wings.

Behing Jeongyodang there is Sangdeoksa and Jangpangak, a tree to print the ‘Dosan 12 Songs’. Okjingak, which was rebuilt in 1970, is now an exhibit building for the relics of Toegye such as his stationary, furniture, and his favorite books etc.

Jindo Miracle Searoad Festival

Let's go to Jindo!

Last year I visited this island to see  the magical sea parting phenomenon in Jindo island. every year it happens around the end of March or April. This year Miracle Searoad Festival will be on 3/29 through 4/2 in Jindo island.

There will be many great events to take part in before the sea parting starts. You can see a maritime ship parade, traditional Korean dance and Pansori performance, traditional 5000 year old group dance performance (강강술래), and much more.

The highlight of this festival is the sea parting, so we will make sure not to miss this. We will head to the edge of the sea just around 4:30 am and join the locals who want to ‘walk on water' with torchlight.’ As the sea pulls away a sandbank emerges and the path is revealed. You will be able to walk on the 40 metre wide path for about 2.8 kilometres.

The world-famous Magical sea way is only the phenomenon exposes 2.8km-long sea way between Hoedong-ri, Gogun-myeon and Modo-ri, Uisin-myeon when water is lowered because of tides. However it is still mysterious in its regular width of about 40m under the water. The tides come in and out 2 times a day. Though there are the differences of tide’s speed and wave such as Typhoon, this risen pit has formed. Every year, about 400 thousand Korean and foreign tourists rush to see this miracle, a fully exposed sea way for 1 hour. It is known as worldwide spot where the most people gather to see a temporary happening.

You may have heard of Jindo dogs. These dogs are very special to Korean people, because of their intelligence, fierce loyalty and bravery. Originally bred as hunting dogs, now they are more often simply pets. At the festival we will be able to see some of these dogs perform as well as be available for us to pet.

This magical sea way, called as the modern Mose’s miracle, became world-famous when French ambassador in Korea, Mr. Pierre Randi visited Jindo in 1975 and write about this phenomenon in French paper. In 1996, a Japanese pop singer Dendoyosimi recorded big hit with the song “Jindo story", based on this sea way. Numbers of Japanese tourists has increased sharply thereafter

Jindo county presents many characteristic folk arts to visitors. The performance includes Nationally Designated important intangible cultural properties such as Ganggangsullae (Circle Dance), Jindo Ssitgimgut (Shaman Rite), Field song, Jindo Dasiraegi and Jeollanam Provincially Designated intangible cultural properties like funeral song and drum play. Besides, there are various events to please tourists growing larger year by year.

If you have time end of this month I can recommend you to visit Jindo, you will definitely like it.
